PROFILE

Chaykov

Chaykov (Eishi Saiki) is a Tokyo-based illustrator and designer. He works under the name “Chaykov” as an illustrator and as “Eishi Saiki” on design for animation productions at Production I.G.

His work and design are rooted in a distinctive perspective: viewing expansive worlds as if they were dioramas, imagining the spaces that extend beyond them, and meticulously constructing architecture, vehicles, and fine details.

His fascination with Tokyo as a subject for imagination and creation goes back to his childhood, when he would visit Tokyo Tower with his grandmother, who lived nearby, and look out over the city below. Through his work, Chaykov hopes to add a little sense of wonder and enjoyment to the time spent in Tokyo by those who live there and those who visit.

Tchaikov's Workshop

My Perfect Creative Environment

A quiet, compact space, lots of my favorite things, a window with a nice view, good drinks and lots of sweets, and someone who sometimes comes to disturb me when I'm too focused.

Disaster strikes Tchaikov's workplace

Sometimes disasters happen...

Tchaikov's signature

Chaykov's signature is designed as a view of Tokyo from Tokyo Bay with Mount Fuji in the distance. The letter H plays the role of the Rainbow Bridge and A the Tokyo Tower; the combination of Y, K, O an V represents the complicated appearance of the Metropolitan Expressway.

Tchaikov and his beloved cat, Lilu
Riru
2003 - 2021

Chaykov's beloved cat, Riru is the model and inspiration for the gray cat in his artworks. Chaykov knew that many cats do not mind living in small indoor spaces, but he felt that he had forced Riru to be an indoor cat on his own, and he wanted to at least create playgrounds for him throughout Tokyo through art.

Riru lived a long life of 19 years, including 4 years in California, and passed away in December 2021. About a year before that, the veterinarian had told Chaykov that Riru's life would soon be over. When Chaykov learned of this, he decided to draw Riru as many times as possible while he was still alive.
